Edward Dwurnik

Dwurnik Edward

Edward Dwurnik (1943–2018) was one of the most recognizable and prolific contemporary Polish painters and graphic artists. His body of work, consisting of over 5,000 paintings, serves as a unique chronicle of Polish reality.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1963–1970). A turning point in his career was discovering the work of the self-taught artist Nikifor Krynicki, which inspired him to adopt a “primitive” aesthetic. Dwurnik’s most famous series is “Hitchhiking Trips”– aerial cityscapes of Polish towns that combine meticulous detail with grotesque elements. Other significant cycles include “Warsaw,” “Workers,” and “Sportsmen,” where he portrayed life in communist Poland with irony and uncompromising honesty. Dwurnik was the only Polish artist to achieve significant international success.
